'A museum is a non-profit, permanent institution at the service of society. It collects, preserves, interprets, researches, and exhibits tangible and intangible heritage. Open to the public, accessible and inclusive, museums promote diversity and sustainability. They operate and communicate ethically and professionally and with community involvement, offering diverse experiences for education, enjoyment, reflection and knowledge sharing.' This is how ICOM, the International Council of Museums, agreed to define the institution museum in August 2022: a description that, in a few lines, sums up the many roles played by museums in modern society. The term 'museum', today, goes far beyond the original mουσεῖον, the sacred place dedicated to the Muses, and thus to the arts represented by them, a space of learned and academic reflection. Contemporary museums are spheres of social living, spaces of confrontation and confrontation, diverse and polymorphous in terms of legal regimes, organizational-management models and, of course, the historical-artistic and archaeological nature of the contexts that constitute them. Diversity is the only constant, especially in a country like Italy, with its 5,000 places of culture, including galleries and picture galleries, museums and archaeological parks, and monumental, secular, and religious complexes. The series Italia. Musei da scoprire is a journey among these places, off the beaten path, outside the big attractions known to most, but in the midst of that historical and cultural fabric that makes the national cultural heritage a dense and widespread museum.
