Descripción

Angelo Bottini and Lucia Lecce catalog and analyze 154 South Italian red-figured vases from the "Domenico Ridola" National Archaeological Museum in Matera, primarily originating from grave goods in Timmari, Matera, and Irsina. Through combined stylistic, iconographic, and morphological analyses, the work charts the shifting trade networks of the Bradano-Matera region, demonstrating an early reliance on Metapontine workshops followed by the near-total dominance of Tarentine production during the fourth century BC. While high-status tombs feature prestigious, large-scale vessels with complex narrative, mythological, or Dionysian scenes, common grave assemblages contain smaller, standardized shapes—such as pelikai and bell-kraters—crafted by secondary artisans linked to major workshops like that of the Darius Painter. Ultimately, the study evaluates ancient repair techniques, regional artisan mobility, and morphological evolution across vessel types, offering vital insights into local consumption patterns and eschatological funerary customs.
