Description

This volume of the Corpus Vasorum Antiquorum (Russia VII, Pushkin State Museum of Fine Arts VII) catalogs approximately one hundred Archaic Corinthian, Etrusco-Corinthian, and Etruscan black-figure vessels, drawing primarily on research by Natalia Sidorova. The collection encompasses various functional ceramic shapes—including alabastra, aryballoi, pyxides, kotylai, oinochoai, and plates—that illustrate the stylistic evolution of ancient vase-painting. Protocorinthian and Early Corinthian periods are highlighted by fine examples of the Ornamental and White-Dot styles, featuring intricate incised animal friezes, mythological figures such as Boread and Typhon, and works linked to the Delos Group and the Taucheira Painter. Middle and Late Corinthian developments reflect stylistic shifts through narrative compositions, warrior friezes, and hand attributions to artisans like the Vulci Painter, the Scale Painter, the Cavalcade Painter, and the Otterlo Painter. Additionally, regional workshop output from Panticapaeum and Etruria is documented, including local imitations and an Etruscan column-krater attributed to the Micali Painter.
