Description
This publication presents the definitive archaeological report on the Archaic Greek necropolis of Rito (Ragusa, Sicily), excavated in 1956 under the direction of Antonino Di Vita. Operating as an emporic settlement serving the indigenous center of Hybla Heraia, the site yielded 76 systematically investigated tombs dating primarily from around 570 BC to the early 5th century BC. Through meticulous typology—comprising trench graves, stone-built cists, sarcophagi, and a monumental chamber tomb—alongside complete cataloging of skeletal remains and rich grave goods, the work provides crucial demographic and socioeconomic data. The extensive ceramic repertoire includes fine Corinthian, Attic, Laconian, East Greek, and colonial imports alongside local indigenous vessels. Furthermore, architectural and sculptural finds, coupled with correspondence from Sir John D. Beazley, illuminate the complex cultural interchange and peaceful cohabitation between Greek colonists and the native Sicel population.
