Beschreibung

This study provides a comprehensive synthesis and critical reassessment of the Orientalizing period in Chiusi and its surrounding territory, spanning from the late 8th to the early 6th century BCE. Addressing the long-standing fragmentation of archaeological data caused by 19th-century excavations and unprovenanced finds, the research systematically catalogings and re-evaluates 86 grave goods contexts alongside local archival records. By establishing a rigorous typology of local impasto ceramics—the primary chronological indicators—the monograph constructs a solid chronological framework divided into distinct phases and sub-phases. Beyond ceramic typologies, the analysis reconsiders key cultural manifestations, including canopic urns, aristocratic chamber tombs under barrows, settlement topography, and trade imports. Ultimately, this work clarifies the crucial socio-economic transition from the late Villanovan culture to the emergence of an expanded aristocratic elite, shedding new light on the regional development of inland northern Etruria.
