Beschreibung

This academic study examines the typological and structural evolution of Roman villas in the countryside surrounding Rome (Agro Romano). Utilizing a comprehensive cataloging methodology, the research analyzes a sample of approximately one hundred archaeological sites that possess published floor plans and reliable documentation. The analysis reveals consistent architectural patterns, demonstrating how these rural complexes transformed across centuries. Late Republican structures characterized by opus quadratum, underground cisterns, and cuniculi were iteratively expanded during the Imperial era. These updates included the introduction of bath complexes, monumental pavilion layouts, advanced hydraulic systems, and sophisticated floor decorations like optical mosaics and opus sectile. Furthermore, the study investigates the clear spatial division between residential (pars urbana) and agricultural or production areas (pars rustica), highlighting their economic functions. Ultimately, this systematic classification offers an essential framework for understanding suburban settlement dynamics, economic shifts, and land-use evolution from the Middle Republic through Late Antiquity.
