Description

This study examines the urbanism and spatial organization of the ancient Roman city of Falerio (modern Piane di Falerone, Marche) and its immediate suburbium. Despite centuries of antiquarian interest and excavations, previous scholarly efforts predominantly targeted individual monumental structures and isolated artistic or epigraphic artifacts. Integrating direct field surveys, aerial photography, and geological assessments, the monograph establishes a systematic topographic analysis of the settlement. The research synthesizes diverse primary evidence, including unpublished archival documentation, historical cartography, epigraphic records, and excavation reports. By compiling a comprehensive catalog of architectural remains—such as the theater, amphitheater, aqueduct cisterns, residential complexes, and suburban structures—the work provides a contextualized reconstruction of the urban layout, public monuments, infrastructure, and territorial evolution from the Augustan period through late antiquity. The resulting thematic atlas rectifies prior analytical gaps, delivering an integrated framework for understanding Roman civic planning in the Picenum region.
