Description
This volume of the Corpus Vasorum Antiquorum presents a comprehensive study of the South Italian and Sicilian red-figure pottery preserved at the Regional Archaeological Museum of Agrigento. Authored by Monica De Cesare, the catalogue examines four primary assemblages: the original core of the former Municipal Museum, the Barons Giudice Collection, state-owned deposits, and materials recovered from mid-twentieth-century excavations in Agrigento and its surrounding territory. The published corpus encompasses Apulian, Lucanian, Proto-Sicilian, Campanian, Paestan, and Sicilian ceramic traditions. Through detailed stylistic, typological, and iconographic analyses, the author traces workshop attributions, regional trade dynamics, and nineteenth- to twentieth-century collection history. Furthermore, the study contextualizes the functional, ritual, and funerary roles of these decorated vessels within multicultural ancient Sicilian environments, incorporating finds from urban sanctuaries, votive deposits, and local necropoleis.
