Description

A critical analysis of the architectural, urbanistic, and infrastructural role of public water displays in Roman Tripolitania is presented, focusing on the minor fountains and nymphaea of Leptis Magna. Built between the first and fifth centuries AD, these structures reflect both functional water distribution needs and public prestige within the evolving urban grid. Through high-precision surveys, structural examination, and archival research, the study examines seven representative monuments, including the fountain near the theater, the Lacus of Lollianus Avitus, and the water features along the Cardo Maximus and the Chalcidicum. Structural materials, masonry techniques, and hydraulic conduits are scrutinized to reconstruct building phases and damage caused by fourth-century earthquakes. Stratigraphic soundings and analytical studies of mortars, volcanic aggregates, and lead pipes provide direct insights into local construction technology and material selection. Ultimately, the volume highlights how minor urban architecture illustrates the complex processes of local acculturation, civic patronage, and adaptation to Roman imperial models.
