Descrizione

Based on research conducted at Sapienza University of Rome, this monograph provides a systematic analysis and documentation of the architectural decoration and marble revetments of the Basilica of Maxentius in Rome. Through detailed contextual examination, typological study, and metrological analysis, the author investigates the surviving elements, disiecta membra, and archival documentation to reconstruct the three principal architectural orders of the complex. The study highlights the extensive reuse (spolia) of heterogeneous architectural components and evaluates the logistical, technical, and structural strategies employed by Late Antique builders to assemble diverse materials within a monumental design. Furthermore, the volume examines the stuccos, floorings, and stylistic hand of the workshops involved, demonstrating how Late Imperial craftsmanship achieved a high-impact visual unity despite empirical adaptations and shifting site economies.
