Description

A systematic critical synthesis of the historical, morphological, and archaeological landscape of ancient Chiusi (Clusium) reveals a complex, highly dynamic urban continuum from the Final Bronze Age through the Middle Ages. Grounded in structural, epigraphic, and literary evidence, this work reconstructs the town's spatial organization, focusing on architectural developments from the 3rd century BCE onward. By critically analyzing archaeological interventions—including subterranean tunnel networks, public hydraulic infrastructure like the Piazza del Duomo cistern, and key monumental remains—the investigation delineates the ancient street network and urban boundaries. Epigraphic data and primary literary sources further corroborate the existence of civic monuments, public porticoes, and major sanctuaries, highlighting the transformation of the Etruscan core into a flourishing Roman town. Ultimately, this research provides a comprehensive topographical framework essential for understanding the evolution of the ancient urban form and supporting modern heritage preservation efforts.
