Description

This study provides a comprehensive socio-economic and architectural analysis of public building programs across the provinces of Asia Minor from the Flavian to the Severan periods. By examining epigraphic, legal, and archaeological evidence, it reconstructs the administrative procedures, financial mechanisms, and patron networks that shaped Roman provincial urbanism. The research evaluates the roles of imperial authorities, provincial governors, local elites, civic institutions, and architects in initiating and executing monumental projects. Special emphasis is placed on quantifying marble expenditure, tracing trade dynamics, and analyzing the structural and decorative reliance on prestigious white and colored marbles. Ultimately, the investigation demonstrates how competitive civic evergetism, institutional rivalry (aemulatio), and imperial urban policy transformed the architectural image of Anatolian cities, establishing monumental facades, colonnades, and lavish marble decorations as fundamental indicators of civic status and public prestige (splendor publicus) within the Roman Empire.
