Description

This book by Elena Pettenò investigates the symbolic role and spatial-temporal function of the cruciamenta—the eternal damnation of iconic sinners such as Tantalus, Sisyphus, Ixion, Tityus, Ocnus, and the Danaids—within the Roman underworld (Acheruns). By integrating literary sources, philosophical discourses, and a thorough archaeological inventory of 28 Roman artifacts (including frescoes, mosaics, sarcophagi, and stuccos), the study traces the evolution of these mythical figures from classical paradigms of hybris into polysemic visual indicators of the Underworld. Pettenò analyzes how their punishments operated as metaphors within private, public, and funerary context decorative programs from the 1st century BCE to the 3rd century CE. Ultimately, the research demonstrates how Roman culture adapted traditional Greek eschatological motifs to navigate complex existential anxieties, political ideologies, and mystery-cult initiation paradigms, turning the perpetual torment of the damned into a key element for conceptualizing the afterlife and human destiny post-mortem.
