Description
This volume catalogues the Lucanian red-figure vases housed in the State Hermitage Museum, marking the inaugural publication of the institution's extensive antique ceramic collection. Authored by Elena Ananich and edited within the framework of the Corpus Vasorum Antiquorum, the catalog presents approximately thirty items, constituting the largest collection of Lucanian pottery within the former Soviet Union. The material is meticulously organized by specific workshops and master painters, prominently featuring pieces attributed to the Pisticci, Amykos, Creusa, and Dolon Painters, alongside examples from the Intermediate Group, the Choephoroi Painter, and the Anabates Painter. Most of these antiquities entered the museum during the nineteenth century through prominent European collections such as those of Pizzati and Campana, while others originated from archaeological excavations in the North Black Sea region. Through detailed iconographic descriptions, comparative stylistic analyses, and comprehensive photographic plates, this study illuminates the developmental trajectories of early and middle Lucanian vase-painting.
