Description

This study examines the structural evolution, recruitment mechanisms, and political status of the Roman Senate in Ostrogothic Italy. Grounded in a systematic analysis of Cassiodorus's Variae alongside imperial legal frameworks, the authors re-evaluate the traditional historiographical narrative regarding late antique assemblies. Rather than accepting a complete convergence between Ostrogothic Italy and Constantinople—or a total restriction of senatorial functions exclusively to holders of the rank of illustris—the investigation highlights the persistence and adaptation of traditional institutional pathways. By re-examining mechanisms such as entry through holding offices, hereditary transmission of status, and birthright admission procedures, the work demonstrates how the Roman senatorial order maintained a distinct internal stratification, coherence, and institutional autonomy under Gothic rule. Ultimately, the volume provides a comprehensive picture of the Senate's socio-political function during a period of profound transformation.
