Description

This volume examines the role of the Atlantic ports of Baetica and Lusitania, along with their commercial and economic networks connecting the southwestern Iberian Peninsula to the Western Mediterranean and Rome. Adopting an interdisciplinary and holistic framework, the contributions analyze archaeological, epigraphic, numismatic, and literary evidence to reconstruct maritime trade routes, port infrastructure, and urban development. Particular attention is given to the large-scale production, fiscal administration, and distribution of key imperial commodities—such as metals (metalla), fish sauces (salsamenta), and olive oil—originating from regional hinterlands like Gades, Hispalis, Onoba, and Ossonoba. By integrating these provincial enclaves with the logistical hub of Ostia Antica, the research highlights the structural economic interdependence of the Empire's periphery and core. Ultimately, the study offers a comprehensive synthesis of ancient maritime commerce, providing a foundational reference for future investigations into Roman provincial economic integration.
